People Care
As this month’s News Digest is distributed, many of you earlier today experienced the IRgA’s free Webinar available to members, “Right Sizing Your Company in a Downturn.” Reducing staff is one of the most difficult tasks one must do. If you missed the Webinar, IRgA members can access the archived copy by logging onto the members-only section of the IRgA Web site and download the audio and visual files – anytime 24/7/365.

Webinars offer a snapshot of the value of the IRgA, on a smaller stage than the Annual Convention & Trade Show. While you might need to make some difficult decisions for your company, you still need to consider those people who are part of your long-term future – those around whom you are building your team.

At my company, SmithBucklin Corporation, one of our chosen values is People Care. If we take care of our people, our people will take care of our business. It’s not about the words, but rather the behavior. Two components of this value are:

  • Offering people a challenging and harmonious work environment where they can grow personally and professionally, and reach their potential; and
  • Rewarding and celebrating top performers – those who make the most direct contribution to the bottom line and also live the company’s values…where average performers are coached to become top performers, and non-performers are asked to go where they can perform.

While cost reductions may be necessary right now, the most successful companies are able to position themselves for success when new opportunities emerge and the economy improves. Anyone who has read Stephen Covey’s Seven Habits recalls the 7th habit as “Sharpen the Saw.”

What better way to sharpen one’s saw than to attend the IRgA Convention & Trade Show? This event is jam-packed into 2 ½ days for education and networking, and it’s affordable. Show your people that you care. Provide an incentive or reward, and show them what this remarkable, resilient industry is all about. Send them to the IRgA, April 29-May 1, in Pittsburgh, Pa.
